'I`M OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR SCULLY'

He doesn`t have much time outside X-files shootings. His last movie, besides the X-files: movie, was the blunder Playing God that came out three years ago. Now David Duchovny is back in the cinema with Return to me, a romantic comedy. No reason for him not to extend his contract with Fox: next year we`ll still be able to see him as Fox Mulder in season eight of the X-files.

Do people often confuse you with Fox Mulder?

Out on the street, yes, but those people are a couple of pathetic losers. Some people even think I`m Scully! They just totally freak when they see a famous actor. Like their brains stop working, or they think: "Hey, I`m only used to see you on that little black box and now you`re here, and the only thing I can say is: Hey.Scully!" It`s a matter of temporary confusion: it will pass after a while.

How do you feel about heart transplants?

Great. If you have a bad heart, that is.

Are you a donor yourself?

A donor? No please, I`d like to keep my heart.

Seriously?

Sure, of course I`m a donor. Look here in my drivers license, it says it right here. I`m not superstitious about the various bodyparts that I hand over. There no use to me anyway. Isn`t pretty much everyone a donor?

How was it to work with Minnie Driver?

Minnie is one of those actrices WITH WHO everything goes smoothly and who you can`t criticize. She`s always well prepared. That may sound strange, because I always give that compliment, whereas it should be normal. But not everybody takes the time to prepare, although that is the least you can do. So Minnie does prepare and is always feels like it. Lovely to work with. She doesn`t take anything from you , but she adds something to you.

You thought the script was so appealing, because it`s not so cynical.

What appealed me, but at the same time frightened me was that the script wore the heart on its sleeve, and I don`t mean that as a pun. I had never read a script so plain sentimental and magic. It`s just scary. Here I am, straight from a cool tv series and a cool guy in real life. And then I get a role in a fairytale where the most unbelievable things happen to people and they react so totally natural and without cynicism to it. That seemed like a real challenge. How do I play that character? How do I get into that world where not cynicism but humor rules. That had to become a 'freak' of a movie. All humor is cynical these days. I haven`t seen a movie that is funny and innocent. Even children`s movies are full of cynicism.

But cynical movies aren`t always bad?

No, but I mean that Return to me doesn`t go for those cheap jokes. Bonnie Hunt`s humor is very democratic. She doesn`t make fun of other people, she makes fun of mankind. And you don`t have to be that smart or that stupid to appreciate it.
