Review by Anne Jongeling
Genre: Romantic comedy.
Director: Bonnie Hunt
Cast: David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, James Belushi and Carroll O'Connor.
Bob (David Duchovny) is supremely happy with his wife Elizabeth (Joely
Richardson), an Environmental/Animal Activist. After a night of lobbying the couple gets into an accident. Elizabeth doesn`t survive, but is carrying a donor card. A year later Bob falls in love with the simple waitress Grace (Minnie Driver), who received a donor heart a year before. If you understand this you'll understand the rest of this romantic film too: that Bob is immediately cleaning his deteriorated house, that the blind dates of these two searching souls don`t have any chance of succeeding and that Elizabeth`s dog, who misses her boss, just has to like Grace. But you`ll also understand that it won`t be a plain sailing. There even appear bumps in the road when Grace finds out who her heart belonged to.
Actress Bonnie Hunt is debuting with this eatable romantic story, in which she is making the magic of love so clear that she might as well hand it out on a flyer.
But Return to me isn`t boring, it`s just a little predictable and sweet. More amusing is the sub plot from the simple household of Grace`s friend Megan (Bonnie herself), with many, very loud children and the humorous James Belushi as the straight husband. Carroll O`Connor hasn`t made a movie in 25 years and that shows. Due to his accent he`s constantly unintelligible. Sometimes subtitles can be a blessing.
